A new assembly program from the King County Solid Waste Division will take your students to Camp Greenie. There, amid forest and wildlife, two quirky camp counselors will involve them in skits that reinforce actions that reduce waste and conserve resources.
The story of Camp Greenie and the 4 Rs
At Camp Greenie, tucked away in the forest in the magic of overnight camp, two camp counselors gather the campers (your students) for closing campfire to review what they’ve learned about the 4 Rs plus C – Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Compost.
With help from the campers, crazy costumes, silly songs, and some accidental help from the local fauna. We can’t wait for you to meet Rocco and Roxie, the raccoons who tumble in from the big city looking for food in the trash, only to find that your campers have done a great job reducing waste. This assembly is sure to be a good time, brimming with funny, educational, and inspiring entertainment!
What your students will learn
These are the key messages from the assembly for elementary school students:
- Reuse what you can and only buy what you need.
- Sort waste correctly to recycle all you can.
- Put food waste in the yard waste bin so it can be composted.
- We all have a responsibility to take care of the planet by rethinking our actions and reducing waste.
The assembly comes in two versions – primary and Intermediate. The intermediate version includes a section on the relationship of waste reduction and recycling to climate change.
